A historic centre of learning, Listowel has three primary schools - Scoil Realta na Maidine (boys), Presentation Primary (girls) and Gaelscoil Liostuathail (mixed). At second level there is also excellent choice, St. Michael’s College (boys), Presentation Secondary (girls) and Listowel Community College (mixed) offer a comprehensive programme of academic and practical subjects to Leaving Cert with facilities for adult education also available. In addition to the above there are education centres to cater for students with special needs.

Scoil Realt na Maidine
The local boys' national school is situated at the top of Church Street, beside the old church tower. It has had many a famous teacher and many famous pupils.Its best known head master was Bryan McMahon. Bryan achieved national and international fame as a dramatist, short story writer, novelist, balladeer and lecturer. The story of his long and productive life is best told by himself in his autobiography, "The Master".
Presentation Primary School
On the Ballybunion Road, just outside the town, lies listowel's largest primary school and the Nano Nagle special school catering for pupils with learning disabilities. These schools have recently moved to a new specially constructed premesis where they continue to educate the young people of the town in the most modern of facilities.
Gaelscoil Liostuathail
Gaelscoil Lios Tuathail opened its doors in 1993 to seven pupils. There are now over one hundred pupils on the roll. The present staff of four teachers is set to increase to five in September and the school also intends to move to new premises.
