The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) is the usual Leaving Certificate Programme with a concentration on technical subjects and some additions. The LCVP is intended to ensure that Senior Cycle education remains attractive and relevant for today's larger and more diverse pupil cohort. It was first introduced by the Department of Education in 1989.

The programme is designed to foster in young people a spirit of enterprise, adaptability and initiative, developing the communicative, interpersonal, vocational and technological skills.

Pupils taking the LCVP take:

  • five Leaving Certificate subjects, including two subjects to be chosen from a set of vocational subjects.
  • a recognised course in a modern European language
  • the three mandatory Link Modules.
